Songs for the middle of a crisis

I was filled with fear and stress today. Fear that I’m about to lose my job. But I went down into our bookshop and the first song below was playing. I started to worship quietly as I did a couple of jobs there and as I did my heart shifted and the fear left and joy replaced it.

Right now we’re in the midst of something unprecedented in our lifetimes! The rubber of our faith hits the road right here. And that doesn’t mean we’re not frightened, stressed, depressed or sad. It’s normal to feel these things. It’s right to feel these things. But it means in the midst of whatever we’re feeling we turn to our Rock that is higher and stronger, to our refuge and redeemer. Tenacious worship is how we do that. Tenacious worship is how we turn fear into faith and worry into courage. We turn our hearts toward the Lord and begin to worship no matter how we feel – that’s when our perspective shifts and fear flees.

So here are some incredible songs that remind us of who He still is in the midst of all this.  The last two are longer worship sets which you can put on as background music through the day. Turn off the news and fill your mind with the truth!

Our God is the Genesis 1 God. He is in control and He can be trusted.

TREMBLE cover by Upper Room

Psalm 33:6-9 – By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up the deep in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded and it stood fast.”

Every good thing we have comes from our King. He holds our lives in His hands.

FOUNTAINS by Jon Thurlow

Psalm 36: 9 – They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house…For with You is the fountain of life…

It’s ok to feel frightened and sad. It’s ok to tell God and others about it.

MY LITTLE ONE by Jon Thurlow

Matthew 5:3 and 4 – Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

We are sons and daughers of a good Father and nothing shall separate us from His love.

YOU ARE FAITHFUL from IHOPKC by Olivia Buckles (start at the 22 min mark) –

Romans 8:35 – For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present or the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God is our refuge and fortress, an ever present help in times of trouble.

REFUGE worship set by Jon Thurlow

Psalm 46:1 – God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea…

May you be blessed! Let’s hold on to our Jesus together.
